Vital Stim Statement

In view of the growing controversy regarding the use of Vital Stim, The Speech Team wishes to differentiate and strongly point out that the FMEP certification obtained in the DPNS workshop is not related in any way to the Vital Stim program, or therapy. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a viable and proven therapeutic modality when utilized properly in therapy. There are many textbooks written in this area by reputable medical researchers and therapists. NMES is a routine modality of therapeutic care in physical therapy and occupational therapy, as well as speech pathology. The Vital Stim treatment issues are singularly relevant to the Chattanooga Group and should not be generalized to the application of NMES as a therapeutic modality. This would represent an excessive response to the Vital Stim issues. NMES as it is applied in the Facial Muscle Exercise Program is utilized on the facial muscles within a facial geography below the cheekbone, above the mandible, and forward of the TMJ. Our NMES is shallow, not deep, and flows within a narrow flow zone. There is no neuromuscular stimulation flow into the pharyngeal, or laryngeal muscle areas. We feel that all SLPs should be informed of the truthful facts on the value of the neuromuscular electrical stimulation treatment modality to eliminate misguiding statements which impede appropriate, competent patient care.
